The Racial & Economic Justice Fund

The Racial & Economic Justice Fund (REJ) was created to support groups that engage community organizing to promote racial and economic justice at the local, state, national or international policy levels. For groups applying to this fund, racial and economic justice must be central to their vision, understanding of the problem, and strategy for addressing the problem.

Who are previous REJ grantees?

The Racial & Economic Justice Fund has supported a wide range of grantees, from Asian Americans United to Taxi Workers Alliance of Pennsylvania. Check out our list of recent grantees to see if the Racial & Economic Justice Fund is right for your organization.

Does my group qualify for an REJ grant?

The Racial & Economic Justice Fund makes grants to groups that:

  • Meet all basic eligibility requirements and funding criteria
  • Have a long-term vision for and engage strategies that promote racial and/or economic justice
  • Are building a local base for taking collective action against the problem being addressed
  • Are changing the balance of power between community members and decision makers

What is the award size from REJ?

Grants range from $5,000 to $10,000 annually. Groups who have received grants from the Racial & Economic Justice Fund in the past may reapply in the following grant cycle.

Who makes decisions about grants?

The Community Grantmaking Committee is a group of activists and community members who make decisions about grants. Learn more about the CGC.

What is the deadline for REJ?

The deadline to apply for an REJ grant was July 6, 2010.   Grant review is underway now and grantees will be announced in September.  Check back here for next year's deadline in the spring of 2011.

In the meantime, consider applying for a small grant from the Opportunity Fund. These monthly grants help organizations deal with developing issues and time-sensitive concerns that are outside of the scope of their normal programming.

How do I apply for REJ funding?

Read the general guidelines carefully before applying. Make sure that your organization meets both the general guidelines and the specific guidelines (above) for the Racial & Economic Justice Fund.
