Workshops and Technical Assistance
In addition to day-to-day technical assistance, Bread & Roses offers resources to grantees and the larger community through its Barbara Smith Community School.
The Community School is a school without walls. Instead, a variety of workshops, classes, town hall meetings and seminars—not to mention an annual retreat for grantees—provide opportunities to learn about social change work on an ongoing basis.
BSCS programming is generally open to the community but has a special focus on groups working to redistribute power and resources especially those led by poor and working people; people of color; women; lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered people; those with disabilities; and others working for fundamental social change
The faculty of the school is formed by academics, organizers, experts and leaders from around the region and the nation. Programming tends to focus on fundraising, organizational development, communications and organizing best practices. Townhalls and meetings have been convened to discuss issues from education reform to gentrification to criminal justice reform.
